Methodist Retirement Communities Names New President/CEO

Methodist Retirement Communities has a new president and CEO.

The nonprofit senior housing operator announced it named Alan Brown as president and CEO, effective April 13.

Based in The Woodlands, Texas, Methodist Retirement Communities operates four continuing care retirement communities, three life care communities, two affordable senior apartment developments and one rental community across the Lone Star State, and ranked 76th on the 2019 list of the top 200 nonprofit senior housing operators by LeadingAge and Ziegler.

This marks a Texas homecoming for Brown, who graduated from Baylor University and earned his administrator in training certificate at C.C. Young Senior Living in Dallas early in his career. Most recently, Brown was chief operating officer at Methodist Senior Services, a Tupelo, Mississippi-based operator with a portfolio of 12 communities. He has over 27 years experience in senior care, nearly all of it in the nonprofit operator space.

Brown has also developed a reputation for innovation within the industry. He led the teams at Methodist Senior Services to successfully open and operate the world’s first Green House home in 2003. Methodist Senior Services now has 19 Green House homes in its portfolio, with a 20th set to open later this year.

Founded by Dr. Bill Thomas, the Green House model houses up to 12 seniors in homelike settings with private rooms, serving as an alternative to traditional long-term care. This gives residents greater autonomy over their daily routines, rather than be on a set schedule.

MRC conducted a nationwide search to fill the vacancy, which received 253 applications. Eventually, 15 finalists were interviewed before Brown’s selection, according to a press release.

“Brown has the experience and professional skills that we were looking for, mixed with an unwavering commitment to the Christian values upon which MRC was founded,” MRC Board Chair Wayne Haglund said in the release.

Brown will assume duties from interim President and CEO Don Stephens, who is also MRC’s CFO. Stephens assumed the dual roles last July.
