Thrive Senior Living Changes Leadership, Former President Strech Joins Real Estate Firm

Thrive Senior Living President Les Strech has left for a new venture, and Sebby Kannukkaden is stepping in to lead the company as president and CFO.

Strech, who joined Thrive in 2017, has departed the Atlanta-based senior living operator for McNair Interests, where his title is COO and managing principal. He announced his new career move on LinkedIn.

“We’ve put together a significant fund to partner with LPs and banks to develop communities that anyone, of any age, and any ability would be proud to live in,” Strech wrote of his new job on LinkedIn. “The gut-wrenching part … was the choice to move on from the team we’ve built at Thrive over the last half decade.”

Stepping in to fill the gap is Kannukkaden, who joined Thrive in 2017 and most recently worked as the company’s CFO. He also worked as COO of Thrive Senior Living between 2017 and early 2020.

With Kannukkaden in place, Thrive has “huge leadership horsepower,” Strech said.

“I am wholly certain that the best days for the Thrive crew are ahead,” he added.

Kannukkaden’s “passion, sharp insight and unwavering commitment to the company over the past five years” make him a good fit for the role, according to Thrive Founder Jeramy Ragsdale.

“Thrive’s commitment to an individualized, less clinical approach to senior living remains at the heart of the business, and we have no doubt Sebby will continue to bring this mission to life as he moves the company towards future growth and development,” he told Senior Housing News.

As of last September, the company had nine purpose-built communities in five states.

Strech — a Senior Housing News Changemaker in 2021 — pushed for innovation while at Thrive, where he challenged long-held beliefs about the way senior living communities are designed and operated.

Strech’s thinking on senior living design is exemplified by the company’s forthcoming Thrive at Montvale community in Montvale, New Jersey, which includes a central outdoor “social court” meant to be a place where residents can mingle.

“We built our forward-facing design theory around the things society already builds community around,” Strech told SHN in 2021. “One of those things is coffee and another one of those things is great memories around a barbershop or a salon. Another one of those things would be community playgrounds.”Strech is not the only company leader who is making big career changes in early 2022. Others include Pathway to Living CEO and co-founder Jerry Finis and COO Maria Oliva, who are retiring after long stints with the Chicago-based operator.
