Sunrise Deepens Leadership Bench with Kindred at Home’s COO, New CFO

Sunrise Senior Living has hired Nick Stengle as the company’s new COO while also naming Tav Hare CFO.

The hirings deepen the McLean, Virginia-based company’s leadership bench, particularly on the in-home services side. Stengle previously worked as COO of Kindred at Home, the nation’s largest home health provider, which is being fully acquired by insurance giant Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM). Before that, he was with TPG Capital’s portfolio operations team. He also previously worked with hospitality companies HMSHost International and Marriott International.

“Nick’s diverse operations and leadership background across both the healthcare and hospitality industries demonstrates his ability to successfully create value by driving team member engagement and retention as well as customer experience enhancements that create brand loyalty,” Sunrise CEO Jack Callison said in a press release on the hirings.

Hare comes to the senior living operator from Retail Real Estate for Majid Al Futtaim — a real estate and retail operations organization with a presence in 20 countries — where he worked as CFO of retail real estate. He also held senior leadership roles at international real estate investment trust (REIT) Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.

“Tav has a proven history of building strategic, high-performing teams that drive strong financial performance and enable expansion,” Callison said.

And both have “strong track records of fostering mission-oriented cultures and teams as well as building highly scalable operating platforms to produce industry-leading internal and external growth,” he noted.

Stengle is set to take on his new role on Aug. 16, while Hare officially comes aboard at Sunrise Aug. 24.

A representative for Sunrise declined to elaborate on the hirings outside of the release when reached by Senior Housing News.

Since joining Sunrise as CEO this year, Callison has overseen several moves meant to position the company for growth in the post-Covid period, including by planning an exit of its operations in the U.K. to focus on North America. As of July 31, Sunrise operated 324 communities in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.
