Sagora Senior Living is taking over management of a dozen middle-market senior living communities once operated by Eclipse Senior Living, the national operator that is ceasing operations in early 2022.
The addition of the 12 properties — located in Florida, Illinois, Oklahoma, West Virginia, New York, Ohio, North Dakota, Mississippi and Texas — brings Sagora’s total senior living portfolio to 57 communities.
Eight of the communities carried the Elmcroft name, a brand focused on middle-market assisted living; and the other four were Embark communities, a brand Eclipse launched in 2018 to serve middle-income independent living residents. With the management transfer, the communities are now listed under Sagora’s Elison brand.
“Our greatest mission is to operate by a resident-first philosophy and to enrich the lives of seniors,” Sagora Senior Living’s President, Bryan McCaleb said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to extend our care in states that we haven’t yet operated in and look forward to implementing the Sagora difference in these communities.”
This is not the first time Sagora has taken over an Eclipse community. Earlier this year, the Fort Worth, Texas-based company took on operations for a former Embark-branded community in Houston, Texas.
A representative for Sagora Senior Living wasn’t immediately available to elaborate on the management transfer.
With Monday’s announcement, Sagora is among the first operators publicly revealed to be taking on former Eclipse communities after the Lake Oswego, Oregon-based company announced its upcoming closure.
The communities changing hands from Eclipse to Sagora are:

— Embark at Niles in Niles, Illinois; now called Elison Independent Living of Niles
— Embark at Lake Worth in Lake Worth, Florida; now called Elison Independent Living of Lake Worth
— Embark at Statesman Club in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; now called Elison Independent Living of Statesman Club
— Elmcroft of Maplewood in Bridgeport, West Virginia; now called Elison Independent & Assisted Living of Maplewood
— Elmcroft of Bella Vita in Venice, Florida; now called Elison Assisted Living of Bella Vita
— Embark at Orchard Glen in Orchard Park, New York; now called Elison Independent Living of Orchard Glen
— Elmcroft of Marietta in Marietta, Ohio; now called Elison Assisted Living & Memory Care of Marietta
— Elmcroft of Minot in Minot, North Dakota; now called Elison Assisted Living of Minot
— Elmcroft of Oxford in Oxford, Mississippi; now called Elison Assisted Living of Oxford
— Elmcroft of Lake Wellington in Wichita Falls, Texas; now called Elison Assisted Living of Lake Wellington
— Elmcroft at Graham in Graham, Texas; now called Elison Assisted Living & Memory Care of Graham
Real estate investment trust Ventas (NYSE: VTR) had also previously announced that eight different operators would take over operations of its 90 Eclipse-managed communities.
Although they did not contribute to the REIT’s net operating income in the second quarter of 2021, the communities are located in areas with “positive forward supply-demand characteristics, which should position the communities to recapture value and NOI over time as the Covid-19 pandemic abates and the industry recovers,” Ventas noted earlier this month.
“The new managers are expected to provide strong local market focus and oversight for the communities,” reads an Oct. 5 press release from Ventas about the transitions. “They are experienced in middle-market assisted living and have strong geographical overlap.”
Eclipse typically took on turnarounds, and the company had been focused on outfitting the communities with technology infrastructure and leveraging efficiencies of scale in operating them.
But that turnaround strategy ran into hurdles during the pressures of the Covid-19 that were ultimately too great for Eclipse to overcome, chiefly rising expenses and falling occupancy.
