Kendal Corp. Exec Kelly to Lead Front Porch as CEO

Front Porch Communities and Services has named Sean Kelly to the role of CEO.

Kelly, currently the president and CEO of Kendal Corp., is slated to join the Glendale, California-based organization on March 6, 2023. He is succeeding the company’s current CEO, John Woodward, who is retiring after more than seven years in the role.

As CEO, Kelly will oversee the organization, which encompasses 19 senior living and 32 affordable housing communities. The organization significantly grew in 2021, when it affiliated with Covia, another senior housing nonprofit.

“Over the course of his career Sean has shown to be a national advocate and respected spokesperson for the pivotal issues that relate to senior living and aging services,” Front Porch Board Chair Deborah Proctor said in a statement. “He believes strongly in fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and we are confident that his industry knowledge, strong passion and collaborative leadership style will allow Front Porch to continue to provide high quality communities, programs, care and services, today and in the future.”

Kelly comes to Front Porch from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania-based Kendal, where he worked as President and CEO since 2016. Over the last six years, Kelly has led the senior housing nonprofit through affiliations, new project launches, the expansion of in-home care program Kendal at Home and the development of Enso Village, a “zen-inspired” community coming together in California.

Slated to fill in for Kelly as interim CEO is Kendal CFO Amy Harrison. The company has begun a “thoughtful and deliberate search” for its next leader, according to Kendal Corp. Board of Directors Chair Annetha Hall.

“We are very grateful for Sean Kelly’s purpose-driven leadership and countless contributions during his tenure as President and CEO with The Kendal Corporation,” Harrison told Senior Housing News in a statement. “We will continue to fully embrace the Kendal values and practices and draw strength and wisdom from our Quaker-inspired roots as we move forward.”

Before taking the reins as CEO at Kendal, Kelly led growth and new initiatives for the organization. He also has spent time as a principal at development, finance, marketing and operations consulting firm Retirement Living Services.

“Joining Front Porch will allow me to keep learning and to keep growing as part of an organization that is poised to expand its already strong footprint in senior housing and services as we explore a new meaning of aging in our changing world,” Kelly said in a statement about his new leadership role.

Kelly joins Front Porch as the organization as it embarks on initiatives including an ongoing push to convert units at some communities from skilled nursing to memory care.

“The cost of delivering skilled nursing services — not just in our communities but around the country — have continued to increase sharply over the past couple of years due to labor shortages and other factors which have limited capacity,” outgoing Front Porch CEO Woodward told SHN in November. “All of this has combined to make us rethink the type of care we deliver and how we deliver it in fulfilling our mission.”
