Matt Sayre, vice president of construction operations, senior living and multifamily at Ryan Companies, has been named a 2023 Future Leader by Senior Housing News.

To become a Future Leader, an individual is nominated by their peers. The candidate must be a high-performing employee who is 40-years-old or younger, a passionate worker who knows how to put vision into action, and an advocate for seniors and the committed professionals who ensure their well-being.

Sayre sat down with Senior Housing News to discuss how his family’s work eventually brought him into the senior housing industry, how designing and building units affects residents and what the future holds for the industry.

What drew you to this industry?

My father was a general contractor and carpenter, which played a big role in drawing me to the housing industry. Growing up, I spent many summers and winter breaks cleaning job sites and helping with framing. After college, I immediately got involved with a high-end residential builder and renovator and helped scale the business to include larger, more commercial housing projects.

When I joined Ryan Companies, I initially supported a large mixed-use multifamily project. As that project completed, Ryan was developing a national strategy for senior housing, and I was fortunate enough to be involved in its infancy. Around the same time, my grandmother was moving into a senior living community in the Minneapolis metro area. Seeing firsthand the importance of the care component and the impact it had on my grandmother’s quality of life drew me to the senior living industry.

What’s your biggest lesson learned since starting to work in this industry?

The large impact our work has on the residents has been a valuable lesson for me. We are in the business of developing, designing and building places where seniors can thrive. It’s not just about the bottom line, it’s about creating spaces where people can lead meaningful lives.

If you could change one thing with an eye toward the future of senior housing, what would it be?

Pinpointing the middle market. The barrier to entry in senior housing is high, which is pricing many seniors out of the market. And on the other end of the spectrum is low-income housing. There aren’t many options in between for seniors and it will be imperative to provide more attainable housing options for that middle market.

What do you foresee as being different about the senior housing industry looking ahead to 2023?

The climate and volatile market conditions that we have faced in 2023 will lead to pent-up demand for senior housing in 2024. We will need to bring products online to support the demographics so we will see a ton of activity in the development, design, and construction space.

In a word, how would you describe the future of senior housing?

Secure.

Resilience – it takes a lot to do this work well in an ever-changing environment.
