Michael Donnelly, Engage Life Director at Atria San Juan, has been named a 2022 Frontline Honors honoree by Senior Housing News.
To become a Frontline Honoree, an individual is nominated by their peers. The candidate must be a dedicated, high-performing frontline worker who delivers exceptional experiences and outcomes; a passionate worker who knows how to put their vision into action for the good of seniors and aging industry professionals; and an advocate for seniors, their industry, and their peers.
Senior Housing News caught up with Donnelly to discuss their time in the senior housing industry.
SHN: What drew you to the Senior Housing industry?
Donnelly: I first interacted with senior living when my mother and father lived in an assisted living community. The experience of helping my parents as they aged is one that changed my career. We would visit our friends in assisted living communities, and I noticed how employees take such an interest in the residents’ well-being.
What’s your biggest lesson learned since starting to work in the industry?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that anything can happen. And when anything does happen, you can handle it! You learn a lot about yourself and what you can do!
What’s your favorite part about your job?
My residents make my day, and I enjoy making their day. The residents become just like family. I consider many of our residents my friends also, because we have lovely conversations together.
What do you want society (or the general public) to know about your job?
I want society to know this is not just a job. It’s a calling. I have a passion for serving others, especially seniors.
What may be one thing leaders don’t know, that you wish they universally knew, about your job?
It is not one hat or one “job.” It is wearing many hats while holding one umbrella, at the same time.
