Priya Living Reveals First Community in India Expansion Plans

Priya Living has officially revealed the first community in the company’s plans to expand its model overseas, with expats living in the U.S. as the company’s primary target audience.

The company on Tuesday announced Priya Flower Valley, a 42-unit community set to open this November in the Flower Valley township in Gurgaon, India. As planned, the community’s amenities include a swimming pool, cardio and strength center, badminton and tennis courts and a golf course.

Although Priya is not the first senior living operator to expand overseas, the company is taking a different approach than others have in the past by marketing the community primarily to older adults from India living in the U.S. The idea is that as older adults travel home to visit family or friends, Priya will offer them a lifestyle akin to what they might already experience in one of the company’s four Bay Area communities, which are vibrant and eclectic.

During stays of at least 30 days, residents will get concierge support, housekeeping, chef-prepared meals and access to a private chauffeur service. The community’s location also puts dwellers within proximity to all that local life offers, from street vendors slinging pani puri to services at nearby temples.

Priya CEO and Founder Arun Paul said that the Flower Valley initially was meant to target Indian expats living in the U.S., but that he has garnered a lot of attention and interest from people already living in the country.

“It feels like we launched a rocket ship,” Paul told Senior Housing News Tuesday. “What’s happening in India is incredible.”

Communities in India can also be developed at a lower cost basis and the cost of staffing is lower than in the U.S., Paul said, meaning that the company can elevate services without charging residents an unaffordable rate.

Although the community is meant for temporary stays, Paul noted that the company is open to longer ones lasting months. Residents also have the ability to book their stay online. After the Flower Valley community’s Nov. 8 opening, Paul has his sights set on other cities in India for Priya’s expansion, including Pune, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

“We’re looking at a number of cities all across India and expect we will launch multiple new cities next year,” Paul said.
