LCS, Discovery Senior Living and AlerisLife’s Five Star Senior Living brand have registered as the top-scored operators in the latest J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Senior Living Satisfaction Study.
J.D. Power released its annual study, which tracks resident and family member satisfaction on a 1,000 point scale, on Nov. 19. Overall, assisted living and memory care satisfaction is up 12 points compared to 2024, while independent living is up 25 points.
LCS ranked the highest this year for independent living satisfaction with a score of 831. The Des Moines, Iowa-based operator has held the number one spot for seven concurrent years now. Discovery Senior Living ranked second with a score of 761 and Five-Star Senior Living came in third at 757.
The average independent living score this year was 753.
“Earning a J.D. Power award for the seventh consecutive year is a powerful testament to the trust our residents place in us and the exceptional commitment our teams bring to their communities every day,” Chris Bird, CEO of LCS, said in a press release. “Our residents’ confidence in the experience and care we provide is the highest honor we can receive, and we are grateful for their continued support.”
On the assisted living and memory care side of the survey, Discovery ranked at the top with a score of 884, followed by Atria Senior Living at 879 and Frontier Senior Living at 877. The average for assisted living was 867.
“We’re seeing noteworthy gains in satisfaction across all areas of the senior living experience, even in prices paid for services,” Andrea Stokes, hospitality and senior living practice lead at J.D. Power, said in a press release. “One area showing improvement this year, particularly in the independent living segment, is satisfaction with community staff. That is a milestone achievement for an industry that continues to face staffing challenges.”
To determine an operator’s satisfaction score, seniors and family members are asked to rank their experiences across six factors: community buildings and grounds; community staff; dining; price paid for services received; resident activities; and resident apartment/living unit, the release states. The survey collected 2,917 responses this year between May and August.
Dining and activities in particular were two of the driving factors for improvements in assisted living and memory care satisfaction. Dining alone saw an 11 point increase year-over-year, while activities saw an eight point increase. The quality of living units also factored in a seven point increase.
Independent living improvements compared to last year were driven largely by the quality of paid services, factoring in a 28 point increase compared to 2024. Community staff were ranked 25 points higher than last year, and the community buildings and grounds saw a 21 point increase as well.
