Brookdale Senior Living (NYSE: BKD) on Tuesday named Mary Sue Patchett as the company’s chief operating officer.
Patchett, who currently serves as interim executive vice president of community and field operations, will take over the COO role for the Brentwood, Tennessee-based senior living provider on Dec. 1.
Patchett brings over four decades of senior living operations experience and most recently helped “redesign and implement” Brookdale’s new regional operating structure while in her interim position. In her role as COO, Patchett will have six regional vice presidents as well as various operational leaders reporting to her.
In her role as COO, Brookdale’s six regional vice presidents and various operational leaders are set to report to her. During the company’s most recent earnings call, CEO Nick Stengle outlined Brookdale’s new regional operating model, which breaks up the company’s portfolio into six regional clusters of about 100 communities each. In effect, that makes Brookdale “six operating companies,” according to CEO Nick Stengle.
Patchett is “the right leader during this transformative time” for the company, Stengle added in the Brentwood, Tennessee-based senior living operator’s announcement.
“We are focused on improving operating performance and continue to build upon the momentum that began earlier this year,” Stengle said. “With Mary Sue’s experience, competency and passion for our mission, she’s the right person for this position. I’m excited to partner alongside her each day and accomplish our goals as a team.”
Brookdale can more nimbly respond to the “regional aspects of senior living” with its new executive leadership structure, he added.
“We set the goal, we set the objective, we help pave the road,” Stengle said during the operator’s most recent earnings call. “We pave the road, we give the CapEx, we give the resources, finance and HR and our recruiting resources, we put up the guardrails.”
Patchett has held various roles for Brookdale in the past, serving as executive vice president of strategic operations, executive vice president of community and field operations and president of the southeast division.
Before joining Brookdale, Patchett previously was chief operating officer and senior vice president of operations at Horizon Bay; president and owner of Patchett & Associates, Inc., a management consulting firm; divisional vice president at Alterra for over six years; and held several leadership roles at Sunrise Senior Living, where she started her senior living career, according to the release.
